Supervision is a really important part of therapeutic practice. I see it as a collaborative process built on trust, mutuality and warmth.
Supervision
For me, supervision is a crucial part of the work of a psychotherapist or counsellor, both in terms of reflective, ethical practice as well as restoration and self care. It has played a formative role in my own development as a practitioner and I aspire to offer the same to others.
A wise person once said to me 'Don't look for a supervisor, look for a supervisory relationship!'
My focus as a relational supervisor is on the supervisory relationship. To provide a sense of mutuality and collaboration within which each practitioner can reflect on their work and their reactions to it through a focus of mutual enquiry. Paying attention to the supervisory relationship can offer us useful insights into work with our clients. We seek to create a therapeutic space to explore supervisory issues, providing the opportunity for each supervisee to develop their own therapeutic style, attend to issues of self care, practice safely and ethically and work as effectively with each client as they can.
Supervision for Trainees
My philosophy is that it is ok to be a learner, to not know, to ask questions and make mistakes, it's all part of the learning process.
The supervision relationship is very important and within it I will offer encouragement and support to focus on both your personal and professional development. Initially supporting you to develop your confidence in how to use supervision to meet your needs, the role, exploring and developing a range of interventions and reflecting on treatment direction for your clients. There is also the option to reflect on theory and begin to integrate it into practice. For more advanced trainees, developing your capacity to work with unconscious process and if needed, support with preparation for exams. I have a wealth of experience to offer as we work together.
Supervision for Qualified Practitioners / Supervisors
I practice relational supervision and will engage with you in mutual enquiry about relational processes, continuing to develop ethical maturity and engaging with new ideas about theory and professional practice. Supervision is also an important place for restoration and self care.
Both individual and group supervision are available.
Supervision is a particular interest of mine and as well as my work in private practice, I am the core tutor for the Diploma in Supervision Course at Physis Scotland in Edinburgh and will be launching a Diploma in Supervision course at Basingstoke Counselling Service in September 2024 Level 6 Supervision Course - Basingstoke Counselling Service
