Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between counselling and psychotherapy?
Counselling is based on a specific issue in the present and is solution focused requiring, on average, 6-12 sessions.
Psychotherapy is more suited to those who need to gain more insight into their long term patterns of thinking, feeling and behaviour in order to better understand the issues or patterns of behaviour that they find challenge or block them in some way. Gaining this clarity and understanding to make change possible takes longer to achieve.
How could counselling or psychotherapy help me?
An awareness of ourselves and how we exist in the world gives us the opportunity to explore and identify options for change and which ones will best suit us and our situation.
How do I know if you are the right counsellor or psychotherapist for me?
Making the commitment to enter counselling is a significant one. With this in mind, the first session, of 30 minutes duration, is offered free of charge and without obligation,to enable you to ask whatever questions you may have and to talk about what has prompted you to make contact and focus on what you would like to be different and how we might work towards this.
What would happen next?
It is your choice how many sessions you book and this can be reviewed together at any time. We will agree a day and time to meet that is convenient for you. Ideally sessions are arranged at a regular weekly day and time. This gives a sense of structure and aids the therapeutic process. Sometimes life does necessitate a more flexible approach to appointment planning.
How much will it cost?
The initial appointment of 30 minutes duration is free of charge.
Thereafter each session will cost:
Individual: £60 per 50 minutes appointment
Couples: £90 per 75 minutes appointment, meeting fortnightly
Supervision: £65 per 50 minutes appointment
I offer a reduced rate per session in certain circumstances, please ask for further details if required.
